His Majesty the King has always emphasized the importance of the Bhutanese youth and has referred to them as the “future of Bhutan.” Early education is the foundation that nurture thoughts, attitudes and actions of young children.  Not only does it sensitize children about the world in which they live in but also eases their transition into society. The benefits of ECCD centers have been observed and felt, especially by the parents. This has led to a growing demand for ECCD centers in various communities across the country. However, the growth of ECCD centers is not without challenges. With its ...

On 20 October 2020, the UN published the ‘The World’s Women: Trends and Statistics 2020 Edition”. The disconcerting fact was that after 25 years of the Beijing Declaration, the change in status of women in leadership position was dismal. It reported that the proportion of managerial position globally held by women in 2019 was 28% which shows no improvement over the statistics in 1995.  In 2013, women accounted for 8% of all national leaders and 2% of all presidential posts and the story goes on. Closer home, the situation with regard to women leadership mirrors similar trends. As per the Annual ...

Waste disposal is becoming a serious problem for countries all around the world. Rapid urbanization and increase in population have resulted in increased waste generation. Key challenges in Bhutan include littering, lack of segregation at source, scarcity of land for landfills and illegal dumping of mixed waste. National Waste Inventory Survey revealed that the country’s total solid waste generation in a day was 172.16 metric tons and the per capita waste generation 0.23 kilogram a day. Waste management in sub-urban areas and rural areas has not received much attention. Presently the system of waste collection only covers urban and municipal ...

To prevent adolescent pregnancies, we must stop blaming girls and start addressing the circumstances that make marriage and motherhood the only options for them, argues a new UNFPA report. The report – entitled “Motherhood in Childhood: The Challenges of Teenage Pregnancy” – raises the alarm over the dramatic increase in the number of teenage pregnancies in many parts of the developing world, and its impact on adolescent girls’ health, education and economic prospects. Every-year, over 7 million girls below the age of 18, including 2 million girls under the age of 14, give birth in the developing world. The overwhelming ...
