Sonam Chuki

Sonam Chuki is a faculty member of Department of Management Development. After graduating in Bachelors Degree in English (Hons.) from Sherubtse College, Delhi University she joined the Royal Institute of Management. She under went the Post Graduate Certificate Course in Education (PGCE) from National Institute of Education in Samtse Bhutan. She has Masters Degree in Social Science in Development and International Relations (MSS- DIR) from Aalborg University, Denmark.

Sonam teaches Development Theory and Practice and Politics and Democracy in Post Graduate Course and Management Communication in Diploma Courses. In addition, she is the Coordinator of Local Governance Unit and is involved in the district and block levels training in development planning. She has field experience in the areas of Governance, Decentralization, Participatory Approaches to Development, Grassroots Participation and Rural Development. She was involved as a consultant in carrying out the evaluation of the Community Watershed Management Project at the village level under UNDP-Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme and in offering training in Geog Development Facilitating Activities (GDFA) Project for the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs (MoCHA), UNDP and UNCDF. She was involved as a trainer under the UNDP funded Decentralization Support Programme (DSP) of the Department of Local Governance, DLG-MoCHA. Also, she was a trainer in DLG’s Integrated Capacity Building Project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In 2000, Sonam represented the institute as one of the four core members in Decentralization Review carried out at the national level. Currently, Sonam is involved as Local Government Functionaries’ trainer and works closely with the Gross National Happiness Commission (GNHC).

Besides, Sonam has the experience of evaluating projects of the NGOs like the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN) and the Department of Geology and Mines and the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource as a consultant. Her areas of interest include Democracy, Governance, Gender, Social Capital, Buddhism and Development. She is involved in offering demand driven short courses, trainings and conducting workshops. She has written a research article on “Grassroots Participation in Development Projects in Bhutan”, which is in the process of publication. She also has written an article on management for Zinchong Rigphel Vol.1 and on gender, management and politics in RIM Newsletters.
