The Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI) was established in 2025, succeeding the former Department of Research and Consultancy (DRC) at the Royal Institute of Management (RIM), in alignment with the institute’s mandate defined in the Royal Charter of 1990. As one of RIM’s three core mandates—alongside teaching and training—research at RIM is guided by the Policy on Faculty Research and Consulting, emphasizing the integration of research into academic enhancement, policy contribution, and innovation in teaching.
CRI is mandated to coordinate and promote research initiatives across the institute, encompassing both faculty and student research. This includes publishing the Bhutan Journal of Management (BJoM)—a bi-annual, peer-reviewed academic journal—and strengthening the research capacity of faculty members through targeted support and professional development. CRI also organizes a range of scholarly activities such as conferences, seminars, forums, and exhibitions to foster a vibrant research culture within the institute. The institute recognize research as a critical pillar for improving and updating academic content, generating innovative teaching resources, and contributing meaningfully to public policy and national development.
A second key mandate of CRI is the promotion of case-based teaching methods to enrich classroom learning. By developing and integrating case studies rooted in the Bhutanese context, CRI helps faculty and students connect abstract theories and principles to real-world situations, thereby enhancing comprehension, relevance, and critical thinking in the learning process.
The third area of focus for CRI is improving public service delivery systems through its flagship program, RIM CODES (RIM Collaborative Design Space). This initiative applies design thinking methodologies—emphasizing empathy, creativity, and iterative problem-solving—to address challenges in public sector service delivery. Through RIM CODES, CRI supports the development of innovative, user-centered solutions to enhance the efficiency, responsiveness, and impact of public services in Bhutan.
In essence, CRI is entrusted with the vital responsibility of shaping and defining the core identity—or the very DNA—of the institute. This DNA encapsulates the institute’s commitment to being “Distinctive” in its purpose and offerings, “Noble” in its values and aspirations, and characterized by unique and aspirational “Attributes” that set it apart as a leading institution.
