The Royal Institute of Management started offering Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master  of  in Management (MM) since February 2012. The sessions for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is scheduled to begin from February 2014. The MBA course was launched by His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo on the 26th August, 2013 coinciding with its 17th convocation. All the Degree Certificates/Testamurs will be awarded by the University of Canberra, Australia and classes for MM and MPA will also commence from February in the RIM campus at Simtokha. The quality and standards of the MPA and MM programs delivered in the RIM will be the same as offered in UC campus in Australia. There are also provision for the candidates to part take in the “exchange program” at the UC campus in Australia.  26 candidates from the first cohort have successfully graduated and were awarded their certificates by His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo during the 17th Convocation held on 26th August, 2013.

1.       Programs

1.1   Master of Business Administration

The Master of Business Administration will be based on coursework where University of Canberra Professors will present intensive lectures at RIM. It is designed to enable practicing managers and other professionals to transfer learning immediately to the workplace. The broad aim of the course is to offer individuals aspiring general management or senior functional management roles the opportunity to develop competencies of enterprises. 1.2    Master of Public Administration

This course is for graduates who need to deepen their knowledge in the field of public administration, and develop their capabilities to assume higher positions in public sector and government organizations. It focuses on strategic approach to management and equips managers with skills and insights to manage change in increasingly complex public and government sector.  For details, please refer MPA course brochure <Click here>

1.3     Master of Management

This course provides managers in the private, public and non-government sectors with the skills required to improve their efficiency and effectiveness in an era of rapid change. This degree equips managers with a broad range of knowledge, skills and strategic ability to manage both the operations and change in organizations of all kinds. For details, please refer MM course brochure <Click here>

2.       Eligibility and Admission Criteria

Direct Entry to Stage II:

  • A Bachelors Degree with at-least two years of work experience (for MBA, MM and MPA); or
  • RIM Postgraduate (PG) Diploma or equivalent

Pathway for Fresh Graduates

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) Foundation Course (Stage I; 12 months duration) leading to Master Degree Entry (Stage II)

Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency. An IELTS score of 6.0 or certificate of language proficiency will be necessary.

3.       Duration of the Programs

All MBA, MPA and MM Stage II can be completed within a year.

PGDM Foundation Course (Stage I) can be completed within a year

4.       Student Intake

Limited Seats Available in the stage II of MBA, MPA and MM. In stage I maximum of 45 candidates will be admitted. A certain number (numbers to be decided by RCSC) of RGoB scholarships will be provided for the stage II of the masters program. They will be required to route their applications through the Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC).

5.       Program Fee and Stipend

The total course fee per Bhutanese candidate for the stage I is Nu.1,12,000/- while the fee for stage II of the MPA and MM is Nu.2,30,000.00. For the MBA course, the per Unit fee is Nu.28,750/- and the Units offered will be determined based on candidates’ profiles.

The fee for International students is AUD7200.00 for the stage I and AUD9600.00 for the stage II. The program fee does not include the travel and living expenses.

The Bhutanese civil service candidates admitted to the Stage II of the MPA and MM on RGoB scholarship shall be paid stipend at the rate of Nu.8000 per month.

6.       Application Forms and Deadline

Interested candidates may apply for either program. The application form can be downloaded from RIM website: www.rim.edu.btclick here and must be sent to the Registrar, RIM at registration@rim.edu.bt along with the following certified documents:

(a)         copy of citizenship card /passport No.

(b)         copies of the academic transcripts and, if required, its English translation,

(c)          copies of awards received and, if required, its English translation,

(d)         copy of the proof of English language ability, and

(e)         copy of proof of work experience.

Applications for the programs close on 15th January, 2014. Selection status will be communicated as early as possible. Subsequently applicants will have to confirm their admission and pay the fees to be formally enrolled.

7.      Student Exchange/Credit Transfer

Opportunity exists for a certain number of students to study in either location (UC Bruce Campus or RIM/ Bhutan)  to enter an Exchange Program to study up to a maximum of 3 units at the partner institution. However, such candidates will have to bear the costs of travel and their stay in either places. Any additional candidates exceeding the “certain number” will have to bear the tuition cost prevalent at UC.

8.       Selection of Candidates

The selection of candidates for the stage I shall be carried out by RIM Admission Committee while the selection of candidates for direct entry into the MPA & MM (Stage II) will be done by University of Canberra.

9.       Information for International Students

9.1     Visa Approval Process:

In order to process the visa for the international students, candidates will be required to submit the following:

  1. Confirmation of Admission
  2. A passport copy
  3. VISA fees of USD20.00 (students from India, Bangladesh and Maldives will be exempted from visa fee)
  4. Confirmation of Funding

Visa application form (which can be down loaded from www.mohca.gov.bt) along with the requirements mentioned above  may be forwarded to the Registrar, Royal Institute of Management, Thimphu, Bhutan (registration@rim.edu.bt). Following the receipt of the visa application and the specified details, RIM will process the visa with the concerned authorities. Visa can be processed within 2-5 days.

9.2     Accommodation:

The Royal Institute of Management is situated in Simtokha which is three kilometers away from the main city of Thimphu. The management can help to arrange accommodation at a reasonable rate near the institute or in town. The student can also find accommodation on their own. The rate per flat is approximately AUS $250.00. Limited rooms are available in the RIM executive hostel @AU$300.00 per month subject to availability. The Institute is well connected to the city by city buses and taxi for candidates availing accommodation in the city.

9.3     Currency:

Local currency is ngultrum which is equivalent to Indian rupee. Ngultrum Fifty Seven is approximately equivalent to AUS $1 dollar.

9.4     Weather/Climate:

Temperatures in Thimphu, located at 2,200 meters above sea level in west-central Bhutan, range from approximately 15 degree centigrade to 26 degree centigrade during monsoon season of June through September but drop to between about -2 degree centigrade and 16 degree centigrade in January. Most of the central portion of the country experiences a cool, temperate climate year-round. In the south, a hot, humid climate helps maintain a fairly even temperature range between 15 degree centigrade and 30 degree centigrade year-round, although temperatures sometimes reach 40 degree centigrade in the valleys during the summer.
